These events are free and open to the public. \nPRESIDENTS & POTENTATES \nHYDE PARK ON HUDSON 2012 117 minutes \nWinston Churchill once said that meeting Franklin Delano Roosevelt was akin to “having one’s first sip of champagne.” FDR was a supremely charismatic statesman who led the country through the Great Depression and World War II\, yet in many ways he was a distant figure to those who knew him best. One of the few who managed an intimate friendship was his sixth-cousin Margaret “Daisy” Suckley\, and although some of her claims have been challenged by historians\, she was a frequent companion of FDR at both the White House and the Roosevelt’s Hudson Valley residences. \nIn Hyde Park on Hudson\, Laura Linney plays Daisy Suckley\, who is initially invited to reconnect with her distant cousin but soon finds herself drawn into the President’s orbit. Shy and retiring compared to the ebullient FDR\, Suckley observes the nuances of the historic visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to FDR’s Hyde Park estate during the spring of 1939. Much is at stake for the royal couple\, as war is approaching with Britain in need of allies. The hesitant\, inarticulate George VI––a man who never expected to be king\, is played extremely well by Samuel West\, but it is Bill Murray’s performance as Franklin Roosevelt that is quite extraordinary. Murray captures not just FDR’s charm\, but also the jaded instincts that made him the consummate politician. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated R\, with smoking\, drinking\, profanity\, presidential sexuality\, political intriguing\, and defensive royal house guests.

DESCRIPTION:In this class\, students will bring creativity to life in a fun\, collaborative and  exciting environment. They will learn skills in scriptwriting\, storyboard  sketching\, improvisation and camera skills. Students who have previously participated in our program will be able to expand on their  filmmaking skills. Together they will write\, shoot and edit a film in a genre of their choosing  and edit their project together using the professional editing software  Adobe Premiere.  This summer series if for students ages 10-14. SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ The AIC: Dear Frankie
DESCRIPTION:DEAR FRANKIE  2004\, 105 minutes \nFrankie is a nine-year-old boy whose mother Lizzie is doing a questionable thing with the best of intentions. Frankie has only the vaguest memories of his father\, but he gets regular letters from him\, posted from all the places his father’s ship visits. The problem is that Lizzie is writing those letters\, having fled from her abusive husband––repeatedly picking up and moving across Scotland so he can’t find them. When Lizzie\, Frankie and his crusty grandmother arrive in the port town of Greenock\, just outside Glasgow\, they find out his father’s presumed ship is due to arrive. Frankie is thrilled to finally meet his father and Lizzie is faced with a quandary about what to do. Her solution involves a stranger who will pose as Frankie’s father for a day\, setting the stage for more than a few complications as expectations and conflicting emotions have their way. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG-13\, with smoking\, drinking\, profanity\, yearning\, bullying\, a foray into one very menacing dive bar\, and all the health problems involved with living above a fish-and-chips shop.

DESCRIPTION:I KNOW WHERE I’M GOING!   1945\,  91 minutes \nMartin Scorsese is on record for saying: “I reached the point of thinking there were no more masterpieces to discover\, then I saw I Know Where I’m Going!” \nThis film certainly feels like an overlooked gem\, written and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger\, the team known for some of best films to come out of Britain in the 1940s. \nWendy Hiller plays the very English Joan Webster\, who is on her way to marry a tycoon holding court in the Western Isles of Scotland. The vistas she finds are sublime\, however the weather is dreadful\, keeping her from her last ferry crossing. Waylaid with Roger Livesey\, who plays the actual lord of her fiancée’s private island\, Joan Webster becomes immersed in a Highland culture that is at turns gallant and quirky\, and soon she begins to question where exactly she is going… Not Rated.

DESCRIPTION:WILD MOUNTAIN THYME 2020\, 102 minutes \nOur Irish film series concludes with this confection by John Patrick Shanley\, the screenwriter of Moonstruck. Set in County Mayo and based on Shanley’s Broadway play Outside Mullingar\, the film stars Jamie Dornan and Emily Blunt as two eccentric farmers tending adjacent properties. Having known each other since the cradle\, their attempts at romance are complicated by family\, neighbors\, and all the inhibitions connected with Hibernian love. With big broad theatrical brushstrokes (including Christopher Walken’s Lucky Charms accent) this is not a perfect movie\, but the chemistry between Dornan and Blunt resonates and ultimately redeems the film. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG-13\, with smoking\, drinking\, profanity\, multiple funerals\, lithesome swans\, nettlesome bees\, and screen actors delivering stage dialogue.

One day Syracuse finds a woman in his fishing nets and his ailing daughter is convinced the woman is a legendary selkie––shorn of her seal-skin and returned to land speaking in a strange accent. DESCRIPTION:MY LEFT FOOT  1989\, 103 minutes \nIn this extraordinary film Daniel Day Lewis plays Christy Brown\, who was born in Depression-era Dublin to a family of 22 children––thirteen of whom survived infancy. That Christy Brown himself survived is something of a miracle as he was diagnosed with severe cerebral palsy.  Unable to speak or move any part of his body except his left foot\, Christy was initially considered beyond hope by everyone except his mother. But at an early age Christy demonstrated he was indeed aware\, and with fierce determination he learned to write and paint amidst the rough and tumble dynamic of his working-class family. \nIn scenes that are as tough as they are inspiring\, Christy develops into a hard-headed\, sharp-eyed artist\, and when one considers his upbringing took place when a disability was considered a moral failing\, the story is that much more striking. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated R\, with smoking\, drinking\, sexuality\, profanity\, violence\, familial mayhem\, self-hatred and one suicide attempt.
