SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ The AIC: Dear Frankie
DESCRIPTION:DEAR FRANKIE  2004\, 105 minutes \nFrankie is a nine-year-old boy whose mother Lizzie is doing a questionable thing with the best of intentions. Frankie has only the vaguest memories of his father\, but he gets regular letters from him\, posted from all the places his father’s ship visits. The problem is that Lizzie is writing those letters\, having fled from her abusive husband––repeatedly picking up and moving across Scotland so he can’t find them. When Lizzie\, Frankie and his crusty grandmother arrive in the port town of Greenock\, just outside Glasgow\, they find out his father’s presumed ship is due to arrive. Frankie is thrilled to finally meet his father and Lizzie is faced with a quandary about what to do. Her solution involves a stranger who will pose as Frankie’s father for a day\, setting the stage for more than a few complications as expectations and conflicting emotions have their way. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG-13\, with smoking\, drinking\, profanity\, yearning\, bullying\, a foray into one very menacing dive bar\, and all the health problems involved with living above a fish-and-chips shop.

The vistas she finds are sublime\, however the weather is dreadful\, keeping her from her last ferry crossing. Waylaid with Roger Livesey\, who plays the actual lord of her fiancée’s private island\, Joan Webster becomes immersed in a Highland culture that is at turns gallant and quirky\, and soon she begins to question where exactly she is going… Not Rated.

DESCRIPTION:WILD MOUNTAIN THYME 2020\, 102 minutes \nOur Irish film series concludes with this confection by John Patrick Shanley\, the screenwriter of Moonstruck. Set in County Mayo and based on Shanley’s Broadway play Outside Mullingar\, the film stars Jamie Dornan and Emily Blunt as two eccentric farmers tending adjacent properties. Having known each other since the cradle\, their attempts at romance are complicated by family\, neighbors\, and all the inhibitions connected with Hibernian love. With big broad theatrical brushstrokes (including Christopher Walken’s Lucky Charms accent) this is not a perfect movie\, but the chemistry between Dornan and Blunt resonates and ultimately redeems the film. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG-13\, with smoking\, drinking\, profanity\, multiple funerals\, lithesome swans\, nettlesome bees\, and screen actors delivering stage dialogue.

At turns shamed and courted by her neighbors\, Tara rebuffs all comers\, including the local constable\, played by a brooding Albert Finney. Into Tara’s village comes a ramshackle traveling theater company run by Milo O’Shea and Aidan Quinn\, bringing mayhem as well as a breath of life. Against her better judgment\, Tara is soon drawn to the roguish Aidan Quinn\, stirring the ire of Finney’s constable. John Ford’s 1952 classic The Quiet Man now comes across as so brutal it should have a restraining order slapped on it. Nor has the recent crop been all that promising. Wild Mountain Thyme has some good moments\, mostly connected to Emily Blunt’s singing\, but Christopher Walken’s Lucky Charms accent is so cringe inducing\, one wishes he had just played his role as a New Yorker retired to Ireland. \nThat said\, The Matchmaker certainly isn’t perfect. It’s gratuitously potty-mouthed and depends too much on slapstick\, but when it connects\, it’s wonderful. Janeane Garofalo is at her acerbic best as a senatorial aide sent to Ireland to boost her boss’s appeal to Irish-American voters. Arriving amidst a raucous bridal fair\, Garofalo tries to find relatives of the Senator\, only to cross paths with roguish local matchmaker Milo O’Shea\, who inveigles her into the romantic jostling. When the Senator arrives with his shameless campaign manager Dennis Leary expecting a media event\, Irish and Irish-American cultures collide and find a Hibernian kind of love along the way. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated R\, with smoking\, drinking\, fraternal mayhem\, unsubtle sexual innuendo\, and LOTS of profanity (Saxon words pronounced in Irish and Boston accents)

DESCRIPTION:RADIO DAYS 1987\, 88 minutes \nTo do a New York On-Screen series without a Woody Allen film is like depicting FDR without the cigarette holder or the Titanic without the Iceberg. Toxic analogies aside\, he is obviously a problematic figure\, but seeing how there are bigger\, louder New Yorkers who have done nasty things and retired to the Sunbelt\, we might as well show one of his films. The question is–– which Woody? \nThere are the obvious choices: his breakthrough Annie Hall or Manhattan\, which celebrated the city but also presaged his demons. The choice has not been an easy one\, but we decided to go with Radio Days\, a nostalgic comedy-drama about an extended working-class family on Rockaway Beach in Queens during the Golden Age of Radio. Although not part of the cast\, Allen narrates the film from the perspective of Joe\, a boy whose world is shaped by the family radio––its music and programs emanating from glittering\, far-away Manhattan. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG with smoking\, drinking\, mild profanity\, off-screen violence\, sexuality\, nudity\, lots of kvetching\, and Woody Allen.

DESCRIPTION:THE AUTOMAT 2021 79 minutes \nBefore there was McDonald’s\, before there was Howard Johnson’s\, there was Horn & Hardart’s Automat\, once the largest restaurant chain in America. The Automats were essentially cafeterias with food portions behind coin-operated glass doors\, which may not sound all that appetizing from today’s perspective\, but from the 1920s to the ‘50s New Yorkers saw them as the height of modernity\, and by most accounts the food was good. This documentary is full of fond memories about the rise and fall of a Gotham institution\, with reminiscences from Mel Brooks\, Colin Powell\, Ruth Bader Ginsburg\, Carl Reiner\, Elliott Gould\, and Howard Schultz. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated TV-PG\, with drinking\, mostly profanity\, sexual overtones\, urban decline\, 5-cent coffee\, well-remembered pie\, and Mel Brooks singing.

DESCRIPTION:Wed\, Jan 18 (7pm-8pm) Weston Town Hall Auditorium \n\nLillian Rembert and Erin I. Kelly\, in conversation with one another\, will discuss Winfred Rembert’s memoir\, Chasing Me To My Grave: An Artists’s Memoir of the Jim Crow South\, as told to Erin I. Kelly (Bloomsbury\, 2021). In 2022 Chasing Me To My Grave was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in the category of biography. This special event will feature Lillian and Erin’s reflections about the book and Winfred’s life. They will also present slides of his remarkable paintings on leather. \nWinfred Rembert (1945-2021) grew up in Cuthbert\, Georgia\, where he picked cotton as a child. As a teen-ager\, he got involved in the civil-rights movement and was arrested in the aftermath of a demonstration. He later broke out of jail\, survived a near-lynching\, and spent seven years in prison\, where he was forced to labor on chain gangs. Following his release\, in 1974\, he married Patsy\, and they eventually set¬tled in New Haven\, Connecticut. At the age of fifty-one\, with Patsy’s en¬couragement\, he began carving and painting memories from his youth onto leather\, using leather-tooling skills he had learned in prison. His paintings on carved and tooled leather have been exhibited at museums and galleries across the country and compared to the work of Jacob Lawrence\, Romare Beardon\, and Horace Pippin. Rembert was honored by the Equal Justice Initiative in 2015 and awarded an United States Artists Barr Fellowship in 2016. \nLillian Rembert is Winfred Rembert’s daughter. She lives in New Haven\, CT. \nErin I. Kelly is Professor of Philosophy at Tufts University and co-author of Chasing Me to My Grave. She is also the author of The Limits of Blame: Rethinking Punishment and Responsibility (Harvard University Press\, 2018).
