SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ The AIC: Circle of Friends
DESCRIPTION:CIRCLE OF FRIENDS  1995\, 103 minutes \nBased on the novel by Maeve Binchy\, this coming-of-age film opens in the small 1950s town of Knockglen. Minnie Driver plays Benny\, a teenager whose circle of friends consists of willowy Nan and Eve\, who was raised by nuns. All three find their way to university in Dublin\, where they encounter varying degrees of love\, heartbreak\, and enlightenment. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG-13\, with smoking\, drinking\, mild profanity\, an accidental injury\, sexual quandaries of a family way\, and a very creepy Alan Cumming.

SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ The AIC: Belfast
DESCRIPTION:BELFAST  2021\, 98 minutes \nDirected by Kenneth Branagh and based his own childhood experiences in 1969 Northern Ireland\, this film chronicles a working-class Protestant family as seen through the eyes of Buddy\, a nine-year-old boy. With his parents trying to make ends meet and not to get caught up in the escalating strife\, Buddy feels the pressure to “take a side” while at same time befriending a Catholic girl. With solid performances from Jamie Dornan\, Caitríona Balfe\, Judi Dench\, and Jude Hill as young Buddy\, Belfast is both heartbreaking and inspiring as it depicts people trying holding on to their better angels amidst snowballing hatred. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG-13\, with smoking\, drinking\, profanity\, sexual innuendo\, and all the violence and mayhem connected to the Troubles.

SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ The AIC: The Matchmaker
DESCRIPTION:THE MATCHMAKER  1997\, 97 minutes \nWith St. Patrick’s soon upon us\, Irish rom-coms can be a tricky thing. John Ford’s 1952 classic The Quiet Man now comes across as so brutal it should have a restraining order slapped on it. Nor has the recent crop been all that promising. Wild Mountain Thyme has some good moments\, mostly connected to Emily Blunt’s singing\, but Christopher Walken’s Lucky Charms accent is so cringe inducing\, one wishes he had just played his role as a New Yorker retired to Ireland. \nThat said\, The Matchmaker certainly isn’t perfect. It’s gratuitously potty-mouthed and depends too much on slapstick\, but when it connects\, it’s wonderful. Janeane Garofalo is at her acerbic best as a senatorial aide sent to Ireland to boost her boss’s appeal to Irish-American voters. Arriving amidst a raucous bridal fair\, Garofalo tries to find relatives of the Senator\, only to cross paths with roguish local matchmaker Milo O’Shea\, who inveigles her into the romantic jostling. When the Senator arrives with his shameless campaign manager Dennis Leary expecting a media event\, Irish and Irish-American cultures collide and find a Hibernian kind of love along the way. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated R\, with smoking\, drinking\, fraternal mayhem\, unsubtle sexual innuendo\, and LOTS of profanity (Saxon words pronounced in Irish and Boston accents)

SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ The AIC: My Left Foot
DESCRIPTION:MY LEFT FOOT  1989\, 103 minutes \nIn this extraordinary film Daniel Day Lewis plays Christy Brown\, who was born in Depression-era Dublin to a family of 22 children––thirteen of whom survived infancy. That Christy Brown himself survived is something of a miracle as he was diagnosed with severe cerebral palsy.  Unable to speak or move any part of his body except his left foot\, Christy was initially considered beyond hope by everyone except his mother. But at an early age Christy demonstrated he was indeed aware\, and with fierce determination he learned to write and paint amidst the rough and tumble dynamic of his working-class family. \nIn scenes that are as tough as they are inspiring\, Christy develops into a hard-headed\, sharp-eyed artist\, and when one considers his upbringing took place when a disability was considered a moral failing\, the story is that much more striking. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated R\, with smoking\, drinking\, sexuality\, profanity\, violence\, familial mayhem\, self-hatred and one suicide attempt.

SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ The AIC: Ondine
DESCRIPTION:ONDINE 2009\, 111 minutes \nNo series involving Ireland would be complete without one film that touches upon the mythic. Ondine does this\, but in a sardonic way\, updated to the era of the European Union. Set on the coast of County Cork\, Colin Farrell plays a bedraggled fisherman named Syracuse\, whose sobriety is as tenuous as the respect his neighbors hold for him. One day Syracuse finds a woman in his fishing nets and his ailing daughter is convinced the woman is a legendary selkie––shorn of her seal-skin and returned to land speaking in a strange accent. What follows is a tale of redemption\, with Syracuse the fisherman struggling to believe in fables when he hardly believes in himself. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG-13\, with smoking\, drinking\, profanity\, sexuality\, nudity\, violence\, and one very acid-tongued alum of Ballykissangel.
