SUMMARY:Four Session Improvisational Painting Series
DESCRIPTION:An abstract painting workshop using the power of play\, experimentation\, and intuition to create layered\, unique\, acrylic paintings that will surprise and delight you. Absolutely no talent or previous experience is required\, but this approach can be freeing for practicing artists\, too. At the end of the workshop series\, you’ll have two finished paintings you’ll love. We build our paintings by adding layers week by week. \nSession 1: Start Where You Art\nWe start by scribbling on the canvases to loosen up and warm up. We paint words of intention on the surface. Then we make broad strokes of bold color\, using big brushes. We start with a warm color palette on one canvas (red\, orange\,yellow\, pink) and a cool palette on the other (green\, blue\, teal\, violet). Then we add a bit of black and white to both paintings. \nSession 2: Happy Little Accidents\nToday is all about play. We will make random marks and lines. We will swoop\, drip\, swirl\, sketch and stamp with fingers\, objects\, stencils\, and smaller brushes. Each layer has a presence; we don’t obliterate layers but instead use the improvisational principle of “yes\, and” to build our paintings. \nSession 3: Subject Matters\nThis session is all about exploring composition. We may chalk outlines on our canvas\, or we may create masking shapes or stencils out of paper to create designs that feel “on purpose.” The instructor has a stencil library for painters to use\, as well as a projector that will allow artists to draw outlines of digital images\, if they wish. \nSession 4: Wholeness and Completion\nToday we put the finishing touches on our paintings\, including our artist signature. Some may wish to make small final marks with acrylic markers\, which will be provided. We will do a gallery walk of each other’s work\, and comment on what we love. SUMMARY:Landscape: Silk Painting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Imagine the brightness of colors and the freedom of movement of the brush. Imagine the freedom of creativity pouring out of you as we paint winter with one stroke! Not everyone loves winter? It’s cold\, the daylight is short\, we must wear layers of clothing. And it’s difficult to get the positive emotions of light and colors\, during the dark\, winter solstice. \nBut\, if you look closely there are many hidden gifts in winter! You can go bask in the snow by skiing\, snowboarding\, ice skating and sledding\, even wallow in the billowing snowdrifts. Winter smells like tangerines\, mulled wine and Christmas! It is a time reflect and dream about all that is possible. I invite you to journey with me on a bright\, fluffy winter fairy tale as we paint our dreams on silk. DESCRIPTION:The focus of this class is understanding the basics of color including hue\, value\, intensity and temperature. We will create tints\, and tones (shades) of our primaries and learn to mix secondary and tertiary colors plus greys and deep darks (black) from complementary colors. \nWe will create a split-primary color wheel and determine how to use it. We will mix color via layering/mixing on the palette\, mixing on the paper and spattering. Specifically for watercolor\, we will briefly look at special properties such as granulation\, transparency versus opacity\, and lifting versus staining. SUMMARY:Drawing to Painting Series
DESCRIPTION:This series is designed for beginner to intermediate or those looking to re-ignite their creative skills. \nPart 1 (Sept 20\, 27 & Oct 4): the first three sessions will focus on the basics of drawing and observational skills through exercises focusing on line\, shape\, form and value. Our conversations will cover basic drawing supplies. Most of our drawing work will focus on dry media\, including but not limited to: graphite charcoal and colored pencils. \nPart 2 (Oct 11\, 18 & 25): the second three sessions will build on our drawing foundation and move into introductory  painting skills.  Wet media options will include watercolor\, gouache and/or acrylic paints. Composition\, color value\, color mixing demos and experiments will allow you to play with paint and build confidence. We will experiment with realistic an abstract exercises. Come with an open mind\, be prepared to get messy\, experiment and play! Registration closes Sept 17. \nA list of suggested materials will be sent after registration. \nMinimum # of students: 4 \nMaximum # of students: 12 \nCost: $245 \nDates: 6 Wednesdays starting Sept 20 (Sept 20\, 27\, Oct 4\, 11\, 18 & 25) (10am-12pm) \nAs a reminder a list of suggested materials will be sent to you after registration. \nJust a friendly reminder that classes which do not meet the minimum enrollment requirements will be canceled.

SUMMARY:Summer Painting Series: Self Guided Painting
DESCRIPTION:Join a group of like minded painters in the Loft this summer to explore self guided painting! This is a great opportunity to meet weekly for self guided painting and critique! All types of paint are welcome. There will be an occasional live model!  There will be no instruction provided during this series and all participants will be asked bring their own materials.
