SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ The AIC: Ondine
DESCRIPTION:ONDINE 2009\, 111 minutes \nNo series involving Ireland would be complete without one film that touches upon the mythic. Ondine does this\, but in a sardonic way\, updated to the era of the European Union. Set on the coast of County Cork\, Colin Farrell plays a bedraggled fisherman named Syracuse\, whose sobriety is as tenuous as the respect his neighbors hold for him. One day Syracuse finds a woman in his fishing nets and his ailing daughter is convinced the woman is a legendary selkie––shorn of her seal-skin and returned to land speaking in a strange accent. What follows is a tale of redemption\, with Syracuse the fisherman struggling to believe in fables when he hardly believes in himself. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG-13\, with smoking\, drinking\, profanity\, sexuality\, nudity\, violence\, and one very acid-tongued alum of Ballykissangel.

SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ The AIC: The Playboys
DESCRIPTION:Join Doc Crane every Thursday at the AIC for a film and discussion. These events are free and open to the public. \nTHE PLAYBOYS\, 1992 117 minutes \nRobin Wright plays Tara Maguire\, an unwed mother living in a small village near the border of Northern Ireland in 1957. At turns shamed and courted by her neighbors\, Tara rebuffs all comers\, including the local constable\, played by a brooding Albert Finney. Into Tara’s village comes a ramshackle traveling theater company run by Milo O’Shea and Aidan Quinn\, bringing mayhem as well as a breath of life. Against her better judgment\, Tara is soon drawn to the roguish Aidan Quinn\, stirring the ire of Finney’s constable. Intense and passionate in a Hibernian way\, The Playboys captures rural Ireland on the edge of change with even the theatre troupe sensing that their days are numbered with television encroaching on its traditional domain. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG-13\, with smoking\, drinking\, profanity\, violence (including suicide)\, sexuality\, nudity\, smuggling\, and over-the-top “theatre folk.”

SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ The AIC: Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:BROOKLYN 2015 117 Minutes \nFaithfully adapted from Colm Tóibín’s novel\, this film relates New York’s ongoing immigration experience\, as seen through the eyes of Ellis Lacey\, a young Irish woman. Played by Saoirse Ronan in her breakout performance\, Ellis leaves her small town in County Wexford for better prospects in early ‘50s Brooklyn. Once there\, she finds herself in a mirror Irish community wedged in among all the borough’s other ethnicities. At first Ellis is bereft with homesickness\, but slowly she adapts to the New York hustle and bustle\, finding love and fulfillment––only to have old obligations test her new loyalties. With Domhnal Gleeson\, Emory Cohen\, Julie Walters\, and Jim Broadbent. \nBE ADVISED: This film is rated PG-13\, with period smoking\, drinking\, profanity\, and sensuality\, as well as Irish difficulties with swimwear.

SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ The AIC: Wild Mountain Thyme
DESCRIPTION:WILD MOUNTAIN THYME 2020\, 102 minutes \nOur Irish film series concludes with this confection by John Patrick Shanley\, the screenwriter of Moonstruck. Set in County Mayo and based on Shanley’s Broadway play Outside Mullingar\, the film stars Jamie Dornan and Emily Blunt as two eccentric farmers tending adjacent properties. Having known each other since the cradle\, their attempts at romance are complicated by family\, neighbors\, and all the inhibitions connected with Hibernian love. With big broad theatrical brushstrokes (including Christopher Walken’s Lucky Charms accent) this is not a perfect movie\, but the chemistry between Dornan and Blunt resonates and ultimately redeems the film. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG-13\, with smoking\, drinking\, profanity\, multiple funerals\, lithesome swans\, nettlesome bees\, and screen actors delivering stage dialogue.

SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ The AIC: I Know Where I'm Going!
DESCRIPTION:I KNOW WHERE I’M GOING!   1945\,  91 minutes \nMartin Scorsese is on record for saying: “I reached the point of thinking there were no more masterpieces to discover\, then I saw I Know Where I’m Going!” \nThis film certainly feels like an overlooked gem\, written and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger\, the team known for some of best films to come out of Britain in the 1940s. \nWendy Hiller plays the very English Joan Webster\, who is on her way to marry a tycoon holding court in the Western Isles of Scotland. The vistas she finds are sublime\, however the weather is dreadful\, keeping her from her last ferry crossing. Waylaid with Roger Livesey\, who plays the actual lord of her fiancée’s private island\, Joan Webster becomes immersed in a Highland culture that is at turns gallant and quirky\, and soon she begins to question where exactly she is going… Not Rated.
