SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ the AIC: This Beautiful Fantastic
DESCRIPTION:THIS BEAUTIFUL FANTASTIC  2016  92 Minutes \nWith some challenging films planned for the coming weeks\, it seemed only right to start August with a confectionary fable starring Downtown Abbey alum Jessica Brown Findlay as an obsessive-compulsive librarian struggling to cope with her curmudgeonly neighbor. \nBE ADVISED: This film is rated PG\, with very mild British profanity and brimming with twee stylization. \nPlease RSVP by calling  (781) 786-6165

SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ the AIC: The Journey
DESCRIPTION:THE JOURNEY  2016  94 minutes \nIn 2006\, after years of stalled initiatives\, the Protestant Unionist and Catholic Nationalist leaders of Northern Ireland met in Scotland to hammer out a power sharing agreement. Then Prime Minister Tony Blair and his Irish counterpart Bertie Ahern were desperate to avoid another impasse\, and they contrived a meeting between former IRA hardliner Martin McGuiness (Colm Meaney) and the ferociously doctrinaire politician Ian Paisley (Timothy Spall)\, two men who had never once spoken to each other. What was said in their arranged journey back to Ulster has not been disclosed\, but this film surmises how their encounter played out––all the while under the frantic watch of the British Intelligence establishment. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG-13 with archival images of sectarian violence\, terse parochial language\, and all manner of political scheming––whether Hibernian or Britannic. \nPlease RSVP by calling  (781) 786-6165

SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ Weston Public Library: On The Basis of Sex
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this film will NOT be screened at the AIC but at the Weston Library Community Room on Thursday\, August 25th at 1:30. \nON THE BASIS OF SEX  2018  120 minutes \nAs a companion piece to the documentary RGB\, this solid biopic stars Felicity Jones as Ruth Bader Ginsburg in two crucial periods of her life. The first part is set in 1956 when she was attending Harvard then Columbia Law Schools\, graduating at the top of her class––only to be denied employment at the all-male law firms of the period. The second part jumps forward to 1970 when she and her husband appealed a tax case on the grounds of sexual bias against a man to set a precedent for overturning the layers of entrenched sexist legal code. \nBE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG with smoking\, drinking\, profanity\, references to sexuality\, and fusty chauvinists in judicial robes. \nPlease RSVP by calling  (781) 786-6165

SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ the AIC: A Good Year
DESCRIPTION:A GOOD YEAR  2006  117 minutes \nDirected by Ridley Scott of Alien and Blade Runner fame\, this comparatively “small” film came about when Scott and his neighbor in Provence\, the writer Peter Mayle collaborated on a fish-out-of-water story involving an Englishman who inherits a French vineyard. \nThe premise of the English abroad could be a genre of its own\, with Enchanted April\, A Room with a View\, and The Durrells of Corfu being prime examples. In A Good Year\, the Englishman is of a particularly arrogant variety\, played by Russell Crowe\, a high-wire London financial trader looking to make a quick sale of his uncle’s dilapidated chateau and vineyard. Some very French complications soon arise\, miring Crowe’s character in the nuances of the local culture\, while memories of his curmudgeonly uncle (Albert Finney) and romance with a restauranteur (Marion Cotillard) awaken his better instincts. \nBE ADVISED:  This film is rated PG-13 with smoking\, drinking\, profanity\, sexuality\, and a rather uncomfortable swim in an empty pool. \nPlease RSVP by calling  (781) 786-6165

SUMMARY:WPL Film Club @ the AIC
DESCRIPTION:ON BROADWAY  2019  82 minutes \nReleased just before the pandemic shut public venues down for over a year\, this buoyant documentary by Oren Jacoby offers an overview of Broadway from its nadir in the late 60s to the present. With interviews from a range of luminaries such as Alec Baldwin\, August Wilson\, Helen Mirren\, Christine Baranski\, and Tommy Tune\, the film makes a point to show how art and commerce went hand in hand as various shows revived the theatre experience while larger trends co-opted the culture––as seen in the parallel fortunes of Times Square\, which went from a red-light district to a tourist magnet. \nBE ADVISED: This film depicts New York in all its glamour and grit\, involving urban violence\, profanity\, sexuality\, corporate and municipal avarice––as well as some singing and dancing.
