DESCRIPTION:MAN ON WIRE (2008)  94 minutes \nIf this documentary comes across as a heist film\, it is totally intentional\, because when Phillipe Petit set out to tight-rope walk between the World Trade Center towers in 1974 — it was an illegal undertaking. Petit and his collaborators planned the stunt like a clockwork robbery and the film covers every nail-biting detail. Man on Wire also offers a fascinating window into a time when the towers were not venerated\, as the majority of New Yorkers considered them an ungainly eyesore\, but Petit took the first steps to change that perception by giving the buildings a human dimension. \nBE ADVISED: This film is rated PG-13 for some sexuality and nudity\, depicting what transpired on August 7\, 1974\, and does not address events that took place on September 11\, 2001. \n

Set in a mammoth insurance company\, Jack Lemmon plays a humble office schlub who pines for Shirley MacLaine’s elevator operator\, but he is at the mercy of his bosses\, who sing his praises so long as they can use his Manhattan apartment for their affairs. These can be strung as a garland to decorate a doorway\, a festive table or mantelpiece for the fall holidays\, or displayed as a colorful little collection. This class is suitable for beginners and although this class is for adults\, this project can easily be adapted to do with children aged 6 and older. With interviews from a range of luminaries such as Alec Baldwin\, August Wilson\, Helen Mirren\, Christine Baranski\, and Tommy Tune\, the film makes a point to show how art and commerce went hand in hand as various shows revived the theatre experience while larger trends co-opted the culture––as seen in the parallel fortunes of Times Square\, which went from a red-light district to a tourist magnet. \nBE ADVISED: This film depicts New York in all its glamour and grit\, involving urban violence\, profanity\, sexuality\, corporate and municipal avarice––as well as some singing and dancing.
