Instructor: Katherine Miller received her BS in Painting from Skidmore College and her MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts Illustration as Visual Essay Program.
Katherine has been exhibiting for many years nationally and internationally. Although trained in Illustration, Katherine has always been a painter, moving between the worlds of representation and abstraction. Working from the the line of the land, building up layers and transparencies, emphasizing the power of brushstrokes her work is about a contained chaos, yet in a structured way – whether it be more representational landscape or a movement towards full abstraction.
After graduate school at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Katherine spent time at the Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass Village, CO as a Teaching Assistant in drawing and painting, then moved to Florence, Italy where she received a scholarship to teach drawing and painting at Studio Arts College International. Back in the U.S., she teaches privately and at various local art centers and museums.
Every artist has their MARK, much like one’s handwrtiting. Learn how to generate an abstract painting from your Mark, working in the non representational. Work in the moment, much like a dance and very immediate. There is always time to go back in to reconstruct later and edit. Access your natural intuitive unconscious through a series of exercises, culminating in an acrylic painting.
