WILD MOUNTAIN THYME 2020, 102 minutes
Our Irish film series concludes with this confection by John Patrick Shanley, the screenwriter of Moonstruck. Set in County Mayo and based on Shanley’s Broadway play Outside Mullingar, the film stars Jamie Dornan and Emily Blunt as two eccentric farmers tending adjacent properties. Having known each other since the cradle, their attempts at romance are complicated by family, neighbors, and all the inhibitions connected with Hibernian love. With big broad theatrical brushstrokes (including Christopher Walken’s Lucky Charms accent) this is not a perfect movie, but the chemistry between Dornan and Blunt resonates and ultimately redeems the film.
BE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG-13, with smoking, drinking, profanity, multiple funerals, lithesome swans, nettlesome bees, and screen actors delivering stage dialogue.
