Instructor: Melony Poirier is a book artist living in Rhode Island. Her love of books dates back to when she was very young, and the art of bookmaking has been a part of her life for several years now. She loves to explore different types of bindings, often combining different techniques and sometimes creating a new binding to fit the needs of her projects. She is currently binding a series of 30 that will be housed in institutions and private collections across the world. Her books can be found on display at the Art Cafe in Little Compton RI, and at the Hotpoint Emporium in Bristol RI.
This class will explore 2 unique types of bookbindings. We will make a concertina book, often referred to as an accordion book. This structure is beautiful alone, but can be expounded upon to create complex book structures. The second book structure is a pocket sized knife edge binding. Each of these techniques can be used to create one-of-a-kind books. If we have extra time I will introduce the lotus fold to further enhance your future concertina projects. All materials will be provided, however, if you have a cutting mat and/or an Olfa knife and would like to bring them that is appreciated.
