During this six week-long class we will explore how the arrangement of line, shape, tonality, texture and space can contribute to the creation of unique and personal works of art.

Starting with direct observation and inquisitive exploration of a range of subjects, students will create a number of drawings using a variety of technical and conceptual approaches to image making. Considering compositional elements such as balance, contrast, focus, rhythm and symmetry/asymmetry we will construct images that draw the viewer in and encourage their eye to move throughout the picture plane.

Instruction will focus on dry media but students are invited to bring additional materials of their choice. Throughout the course we will look at the work of other artists, have group discussions and critiques.  Open to students with some drawing experience and to those who are interested in expanding their painting, collage and printmaking skills.
